City water arrives pre-tested; well water’s quality assurance is you. The good news: the testing routine is simple, cheap relative to everything else about a well, and locally easy to do.

Every year: bacteria (total coliform / E. coli) and nitrates — the Kentucky Division of Water’s standing recommendation for private wells. Also test after: flooding or standing water near the wellhead, any well or pump repair, a new baby in the house (infants are most sensitive to nitrates), or any change in taste, smell, or clarity. When buying a home: bacteria and nitrate at minimum, inside the inspection window.
Kentucky maintains a list of state-certified drinking water laboratories, and several serve the Lexington area directly — including Aquatic Laboratories (Lexington), Pace Analytical (Lexington), Fouser Environmental (Versailles), and Hall Environmental (Nicholasville). Many Kentucky district health departments also run low-cost bacteria tests (commonly around $50, routed through the state lab) — availability varies by county, so call yours first. Whichever route: use a certified lab and follow the sampling instructions exactly — a sloppy sample fails clean wells.
A bacteria hit usually means shock disinfection and a retest — and if it recurs, a wellhead or casing issue to fix, or a UV treatment system; it is very rarely “drill a new well.” Nitrates above the standard point to a source (septic, fertilizer) and a treatment decision. Hardness, iron, and sulfur are nuisance chemistry with off-the-shelf treatment. The pattern to notice: most bad results have hundreds-of-dollars answers, not thousands — testing finds small problems while they’re small.
Whether it’s a routine annual test, a real-estate deadline, or a result you need help acting on, we’ll connect you with the right professional.
